UConn cow herd ranked fifth among U.S. Colleges and Universities

UConn dairy cowsThe Department of Animal Science‘s dairy cow herd was ranked fifth in the country among College and University herds by the Holstein Association.

The ranking is calculated by Breed Age Average (BAA) value, which provides a way to compare the score of an animal — and the herd average — to the average of the breed while taking into account the age of the animal and its stage lactation. The UConn herd was rated 107.

The herd is housed in the Kellogg Dairy Center. UConn Creamery staff use milk from the herd to make the UConn Dairy Bar ice cream and cheeses.
