Alumna Wanjiku “Wawa” Gatheru was named one of Glamour’s 2020 College Women of the Year. Gatheru earned her bachelor’s degree in environmental studies.

The Associated Press mentioned research by the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI) about how school districts are working to protect athletes from heat-related injuries. KSI is housed in the Department of Kinesiology. Its mission is to provide research, education, advocacy and consultation to maximize performance, optimize safety and prevent sudden death for the athlete, warfighter and laborer.

UConn Today reported that recently retired Nutritional Sciences Professor Hedley Freake was the biggest fundraiser for the UConn Health Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k races held June 4-7. Freake raised nearly $3,000 and he is quoted in the article.

Robert Huggins, an assistant research professor in the Department of Kinesiology, was a guest on The In with Dr. Tim podcast. He discussed the safe return to exercise and sport during the COVID-19 pandemic. Huggins is also the president of research & athlete performance and safety at the Korey Stringer Institute.

Kinesiology Professor Douglas Casa was a guest on the Healthy Young Athlete podcast to discuss heat illness in athletics. Casa is also Chief Executive Officer of the Korey Stringer Institute.
