Scientist to receive PSA Early Achievement Award for Research

Assistant Professor Abhi Upadhyay of the Department of Animal Science was chosen by the Poultry Science Association (PSA) as the recipient of the 2020 PSA Early Achievement Award for Research. The award recognizes the achievements of PSA members in the early stages of their career in poultry research.

Upadhyay’s research aims to develop strategies to control foodborne pathogens, especially those associated with poultry. After earning his Ph.D. in animal science from UConn in 2014, he returned to Storrs as a faculty member in the department in January 2019. Read more about Upadhyay and his research on Naturally.

The award will be presented at the PSA Virtual Annual Meeting, July 20-22, 2020.


Faculty member named to food and nutrition organization’s Board of Directors

Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News (Cherokee County, GA) reported that Ellen Shanley, a lecturer in the Department of Allied Health Sciences (AHS), was named to the 2020-2021 Board of Directors of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Nineteen national leaders in food, nutrition and health sit on the Board of Directors, which oversees the strategic direction, budget, guidelines and policies of the Academy.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, representing more than 100,000 credentialed practitioners.

Shanley will serve as director-at-large on the Academy’s Board of Directors from June 1, 2020 until May 31, 2021.


Professor nominated for IAH Council

The International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) announced the nominations for their 2020 Council elections. Professor Gary Robbins of the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment is a candidate for Regional Vice President for North America.

The Council of IAH is the Association’s governing body and is appointed by election by the full membership every four years.
