Scientists study health of Cape Cod’s gray seals

Assistant Research Professor Milton Levin, a faculty member in the Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science, is part of a team of scientists who conduct an annual health assessment of gray seal pups at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge off Chatham on Cape Cod, MA. The team members, from Tufts University, NOAA, UConn, Mystic Aquarium and other organizations, travel to Monomoy Island each January to collect samples. This video, made by Levin, shows the field work with the seal pups. At UConn, samples collected during the field work are used to measure seal immune functions and help validate state-of-the-art tools to measure potential infectious diseases.
